Seasonal
Programs

When extreme weather conditions occur and the Hospitality House is full, the CRU team activates the Emergency Weather Shelter program.

Thanks to grant funding from Housing and Community Development California, CRU is able to provide motel stays for individuals experiencing homelessness, ensuring they have a safe and warm place to stay during severe weather events.

Check for Bed Availability at Hospitality House

237 N. McPherson St. Fort Bragg, CA

All persons looking for immediate and prolonged housing should apply for bedspace by checking in with a House Manager at the local shelter.

2

Weather Criteria Verification

When the EWS is actively operating, CRU partners with the Mendocino Coast Hospitality Center (MCHC) to notify the agency's staff if the daily weather conditions meet the criteria to open the overflow shelter.

3

If Weather Meets Criteria

If the weather conditions are severe enough to open the overflow shelter, applicants should apply for bed space at Hospitality House between 12:00 P.M to 3:00 P.M. Late intakes can be approved case by case, contact CRU at (707) 961-2800 opt. 6 for approval.

As CRU and MCHC processes applications, participants can attend the dinner meal at 3 PM.

Continued Follow Up

As this is a seasonal program, participants are expected to meet with a CRU member to receive a needs assessment to navigate long-term goals and connect with the appropriate community services providers.

CRU will provide set up follow-up appointments at the time of intake.

FAQs

Can I get my own room?

No, everyone will be assigned a roommate regardless of circumstances or requests.

Can I bring my pet?

Yes, as long as it is well behaved, and spayed or neutered. Additionally, you will need to provide proof that your pet is spayed or neutered.

Will a meal be provided for me?

No. However, after checking for availability at the Hospitality House, you may stay there until 3pm for their daily hot meal.

Can I choose my roommate?

No, the CRU team will assign you a roommate of the same gender.

Can I stay with my significant other?

No, we do not allow significant others to stay together. You will be assigned a roommate of the same gender.

Can I check in early or check out late?

No. Check in at the motel is at 5pm, and check out is the following day at 11am. You must be completely off the premises before and after those times.

What if I work during check in time?

Call the Hospitality House to let them know, or call the CRU team. You will need to provide your work schedule and come to the Police Department in order to get a voucher.

Are there rollover nights?

No, you must inquire about availability at the Hospitality House every day.

Can I have guests stay in my motel room?

No, having any guests in your motel room that are not your assigned roommate will result in either a temporary or permanent ban.

How many people can use the EWS daily?

This is entirely dependent on the motel. If there is a limited supply of rooms, the rooms will be given out on a first come, first service basis.

How will I know if the EWS is open?

Inquire daily from 12pm - 1pm at the Hospitality House to see if the EWS is open due to severe weather.

What is the purpose of the Emergency Weather Shelter?

The Emergency Weather Shelter is opened during the winter months, and only under specific weather conditions. The motel room vouchers are given to those who are unable to get into the Hospitality House due to overflow. If there is space in the Hospitality House, you will be required to take a room there rather than take a voucher.

Who is funding the Emergency Weather Shelter?

We have received grant funding from Housing and Community Development California since 2021.

Why do we need this?

The City has seen an increase in vulnerable people experiencing homelessness, many for the first time. This is especially difficult during the winter months, when weather conditions have led to deaths in our community and in other communities.

Who can I contact for safety concerns?

Call 911 for emergencies, or the non emergency dispatch line to file a complaint. You can also always speak with the CRU member the next time the EWS is open if the complaint is not an emergency.

How will we keep the motel and the surrounding area safe?

A member of the CRU team or a Police Officer will come by each night between curfew hours to do room checks, and ensure there are no unwanted guests, weapons, drugs, or alcohol in the rooms. There are also clear rules and regulations signed by each individual who uses a voucher.

Are there any restrictions on who can use the motel vouchers?

Yes. Registered sex offenders, registered arsonists, and those who have been banned from using Hospitality Center's resources will not be permitted to use the vouchers. Utilizing a motel voucher follows the same regulations as the Hospitality House.
Additionally, people who are not local to the Fort Bragg & Mendocino area will not be permitted to use a voucher more than 1 night for the entire season.
Those who have been trespassed by the motel will also not be permitted to stay there.

How is eligibility determined?

An intake is conducted by a member of the CRU team while checking in for a voucher to determine housing status and other immediate needs. CRU will require a follow up meeting to discuss goals and needs. This program is solely for the purpose of helping homeless individuals during the harsh winter weather.
