What is Narcan?
Naloxone, also known by its generic name Narcan, is a life-saving medication used to rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. It works by binding to the opioid receptors in the brain, blocking and reversing the impact of opioids like heroin, fentanyl, or prescription painkillers.
When given in time—either as a nasal spray or injection—Narcan can quickly restore normal breathing in someone whose breathing has slowed or stopped due to an overdose.
Despite how effective and easy to use it is, Narcan still carries stigma, with some people mistakenly believing that making it widely available encourages drug use. In truth, Narcan is a crucial tool that can save lives in emergency situations, giving people a second chance and allowing time for medical help and support to arrive.
Making it accessible in communities, schools, and public places helps prevent overdose deaths and gives people the opportunity to recover.
